Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Cloud?
Basically the Cloud is the internet – in other words a network of servers. Today we do all kinds of things in the cloud. If you have ever checked your email online, used Facebook or purchased something using Amazon you have used the cloud.
When you use the cloud your computer communicates with a network of servers. Some of these servers are used to store data while others use their computing power to run applications and deliver a service.
An application that runs in the cloud is called a web app. Unlike desktop applications that run on your PC such as Microsoft Office, web apps do not need to be installed - you just need a web browser to access them. The Loyalty Bus virtual terminal is a web app.
Why do we refer to “the Cloud”?
The name comes from the use of a cloud-shaped symbol as an abstraction for the complex infrastructure it contains in system diagrams.
What is the benefit of using a Cloud based service?
For your business the main advantages are:
- The business does not have to make the capital expense needed to get the technical service they require, they simply pay for access to the service and it is made available saving them time.
- The business does not have to worry about data management, system maintenance or putting in place a disaster recovery plan all of which are taken care of by the service provider which enables the business to focus on its operations.
- The business can benefit from having access to the latest technology and services enabling it to develop competitive advantage in the market place as it can move faster than larger or less nimble players.
- Operations using cloud based services are inherently more secure. There is no data to be lost if a laptop or PC is compromised and the service provider takes care of making sure that data is backed up and all security updates are applied to servers in a timely manner.
Can I use a tablet?

What is an API?
The term “API” is an acronym for “Application Programming Interface.” An API is a set of programming instructions and standards for accessing a Web-based software application. The Loyalty Bus API allows developers to interface the loyalty platform seamlessly with other applications or devices adding features and functionality.
Do I need to think about back up and recovery of my data?
The Loyalty Bus application is run on our dedicated servers that are hosted in a state of the art data centre (used for mission critical applications like telecoms or financial systems). We have a managed backup strategy and maintain a fully operational disaster recovery plan ensuring that, in the unlikely event of a catastrophic event causing our service to go down, we can recover in a matter of minutes or hours rather than days.
